Here they answer your questions from the Food Safety Americas 2021 event.
Q: Technology is great but how about the use of chemical rodenticides, the training the knowledge, how to handle, how to choose the best way for pest control?
A: Chemical rodenticides are an important tool in the control of rodent populations in interior and exterior locations and are very effective. Care must be taken to use the toxic baits safely to ensure safety to employees, bystanders, and non-target species. Whether deployed in the interior of a building, or the exterior, it is important the bait is contained in a manner that enables unused placements to be retrieved. There are many options available that can be deployed across a range of infestation scenarios (block/s of/paste baits, powders, liquids and even non-toxic birth control). The selection of the appropriate toxicant is dependent on the nature of the infestation, the surrounding environment, the type of rodent, and the market segment (hospitality, food processing, schools, etc).
The Rentokil PestConnect 24/7 digital pest management program utilizes an exterior rodent bait station that sequesters the bait in the absence of rodent activity. The unit monitors for rodent activity, and when repeat rodent activity is identified, the gate opens, allowing rodent access to the bait. After a fixed time period, the door closes and remains closed until subsequent rodent activity is identified and the process repeats. This technology helps the pest professional to mitigate risk to non-target species and enable them to monitor the activity around the building 24/7 to inform them where the activity is occurring, how much activity, and where to deploy the bait.
Q: We would like to hear the statistics Rentokil may have available pertaining to discussion of increased pest activities related to pandemic etc. Thank you! Rajko Platisa PCR Corp.
A: Rentokil has certainly seen an increase in pest activity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic - for example, across all industries in North America we have seen an average monthly increase of over 18% (YoY 2019 vs 2020). From a global level, looking at the food industry specifically, our data has shown a rise in all pest infestations of just over 5%, and a rise of nearly 20% of rodent infestations specifically (YoY 2019 vs 2020).
Q: How do you tackle the fly issue?
A: Flies are one of the most likely causes of damage and disruption to a business, which is why Rentokil has created one of the most innovative and sustainable solutions to combat fly infestations - the Lumnia range of LED insect light traps. The versatile, modern design of Lumnia covers every business need from high dependency food processing environments to front of house areas, with clear business benefits:
