BRCGS Professional for businesses

BRCGS Professional can be implemented as a corporate initiative to strengthen your team’s capability and expand on-site skills to support a robust food safety management system. This investment supports long-term employee development and recognition, while maintaining the highest levels of compliance.

Continual learning and development is important to ensure our industry meets future food safety challenges. Aldi UK and Ireland support the BRCGS Professional programme, which our technical team has benefited from, and would recommend this to our suppliers. The courses we have completed have added to the teams existing skillset and been immediately applicable to their daily roles safeguarding food safety and brand protection.

David Roos, Quality Assurance Director, Aldi

As a pioneer of high food quality standards, we’re pleased to become an ambassador of the BRCGS [Professional] programme. Educating suppliers about the importance of food safety and quality is more vital than ever before and in doing so, food retailers will be able to build confidence throughout global supply chains, as well as give consumers greater assurance about the products they are purchasing.

Understanding the programme

Programme structure

The programme consists of three modules, which all need to be completed to graduate as a BRCGS Professional. This ensures you have covered the breadth of learning required to implement, maintain, and embed BRCGS standards within your site. You can tailor your learning based on your job role, prior learning, and expertise.

Once you have completed the three modules, you will graduate from the programme and officially gain globally-recognised BRCGS Professional status. From that point, you enter a two-year CPD cycle, collecting Professional Progress Points (PPP), to maintain your status.

Completing your training

The programme typically involves 8–9 days of classroom learning, with workplace assignments required for some courses. You could earn your Professional qualification in as little as three weeks, or sooner if you have already completed some modules.

There is no fixed deadline, but we recommend completing the programme within 12 months. All courses must be tutor-led but can be delivered either in person or virtually.

Previous training may count towards your progress if you passed, can provide a certificate and the course meets these requirements:

  • Delivered by the BRCGS Academy or an Approved Training Partner (with the exclusion of the Hazard and Risk Management module)

  • Be tutor-led and include a passed assessment or exam

  • Meet the duration specified in the BRCGS Professional programme

Your experience or other qualifications cannot replace a required course.

Selecting your trainer

All courses completed must be delivered by the BRCGS Academy, including our Approved Training Partner (ATP) network, to count toward your Professional qualification. The only exception is HACCP (which must be a two-day, instructor-led course), HARA, HARPC and PCQI courses.

BRCGS provides a fast-track option that allows you to complete the product safety management module in as little as three days. The fast-track option also means considerable savings when compared to taking the courses individually.

This operates on a 2-year cycle, which begins as soon as you have achieved BRCGS Professional status. It is designed to keep you up to date with industry, maintain a global benchmark of skills and raise your status as a valuable employee.

All CPD activities completed are allocated PPP. You need to achieve 20 PPP points during each two year cycle to maintain. You can design your own professional development it is not restricted to BRCGS activities - if it relevant to your career then it can be counted. You must also keep your training up-to-date on the latest issue of your qualifying standard.
